Recently, I received a handwritten letter from a woman I spent a relatively short amount of time with. We had done some deep inner work together. Shadow work. Somatic work. The kind of work that asks you to look directly at the things you’ve spent years learning how not to see.

In her letter, she thanked me for seeing her, for calling out her shadows, for staying beside her when things began to unravel, and for showing her that vulnerability and strength could exist at the same time. But there was one thing she had said to me that caught me completely off guard.

“When I looked at you, I saw freedom.”

I think it may be one of the most profound things anyone has ever said to me. Because the irony is that I have spent much of my life feeling anything but free.

I’ve felt trapped inside my own mind. My own body. My circumstances. My relationships. My businesses. My country. My conditioning. My own unconscious patterns. I’ve known what it feels like to be imprisoned by things nobody else can see.

So when someone looked at me and saw freedom, part of me couldn’t understand what she was seeing.

Then something interesting happened.

Yesterday, I shared this story with two women I’m going to be working with on a much larger project. I told them about the letter and what this woman had seen in me. Their response surprised me. Essentially, We’ve always seen you that way.

They told me that I have always represented an immense amount of freedom to them. That there is something about the way I move through the world that reads as free. Now I had three women reflecting something back to me that I wasn’t entirely capable of seeing in myself.

And then this morning, I went to ecstatic dance with a room full of women around my age. The DJ played George Michael’s “Freedom! ’90.”

At that point, I had to laugh. Okay. I’m listening.

One woman saw freedom. Two more women mirrored freedom. And then I found myself dancing to freedom. A trifecta.

And there is something in that song that suddenly meant something very different to me: You don’t belong to me, and I don’t belong to you.

Maybe that’s part of freedom too. Knowing the difference. Where I end and you begin. What belongs to me and what belongs to you. What I am responsible for and what I am not.

It made me wonder what happens when other people can see our becoming before we can. What if freedom doesn’t begin when all of our chains disappear? What if it begins when we become willing to examine them?

I have spent years doing a diagnostic on myself. Why did I react that way? Why does this person activate me? Why am I repeating this pattern? What am I afraid of? Whose voice is that? What happened here? What is my body trying to tell me? What part of me is driving right now?

I sort the pieces. I follow the patterns. I pay attention to language because words matter. I excavate the unknown. And when I find another layer, I keep digging. Not because I believe I’ll eventually become some perfectly healed human being. I won’t.

At 51, I can say I am the happiest, healthiest and wealthiest I have ever been. And I still have gremlins. I still get triggered. I still project. I still expect things from people I love. I still occasionally discover an old piece of myself sitting behind the wheel when I thought I had taken the keys away years ago.

That’s the human experience. We are trying to live in a material world while remembering that we are more than the material.

Flesh and spirit.

Survival and soul.

Money and meaning.

Attachment and autonomy.

Human limitation and something inside us that keeps reaching toward freedom.

That’s The Bridge we’re actually here to walk.

Looking back, I can also see that some of what people interpreted as freedom in me wasn’t freedom yet. Sometimes it was overcompensation. I learned very early how to make life a playground even while life was kicking my ass.

From bullies on the elementary school playground to bullies in business decades later, some stubborn part of me kept saying:

I’m still here.

I’m still curious.

I’m still going to play.

I’m still going to find out what this experience has to teach me.

That may have looked like freedom from the outside. Eventually, through the work, it began to feel like freedom on the inside too.

And perhaps that’s one of the strangest things about becoming more free. Some people see your freedom and move toward it. They think, There is something there that I want to understand. Show me what you learned so I can discover it for myself.

Others may experience the exact same freedom as a threat. Your autonomy touches their dependency. Your expression touches their suppression. Your willingness to look at your shadow touches the places they aren’t ready to see. And sometimes people punch their own shadow while believing they’re punching you.

That isn’t a reason to become smaller. It is a reason to understand yourself more deeply.

It has also made me think about the importance of who we allow to mirror us. We talk a lot about shadow work as though it is something we do alone. I don’t think it is.

We need other people.

Not to tell us who we are, but sometimes to reflect back what we cannot yet see from inside ourselves. Healthy people can hold up a clean mirror. They can see your shadow without reducing you to it. They can see your gifts without needing to diminish them. They can acknowledge your growth without feeling threatened by it.

And when you’ve spent time in relationships where that kind of reflection was absent, distorted or withheld, you realize how powerful a clean mirror actually is.

The reflection of these women didn’t give me freedom. But it helped me recognize something in myself that perhaps I was finally ready to see.

Because I don’t believe freedom is something another person can give you, and I don’t believe anyone needs to become like me. That’s not the work.

The work is becoming increasingly capable of seeing what is actually running you. Your adaptations. Your stories. Your nervous system. Your shadows. Your desires. Your wounds. Your gifts. Your unconscious agreements with the world.

Know thyself. There is freedom in that.

Not freedom from every constraint of being human, but freedom from being unconsciously governed by what you cannot yet see.

That’s what The Dirt Codes are becoming for me. A way of mapping the terrain. A way of turning toward the places we haven’t explored. A way of gathering data points from our own human experience until the territory that once frightened or controlled us becomes navigable.

I don’t want people to look at my life and think, I want her freedom. I want them to look at it and realize, I can find mine.

That is a very different thing.

And maybe that’s what these last few days have been trying to show me. One woman saw freedom in me. Two women reflected it back. And this morning, I danced to it.

Maybe I’m finally beginning to see it too.

Maybe freedom isn’t the absence of chains. Maybe freedom is finally knowing which ones are yours, which ones were handed to you, and which ones you are ready to take off.

I am 51 years old. My children are grown. My stepson is almost 16. I have a husband I adore, a home I love, work that matters to me, and for the first time in my life, I can kiss everyone goodbye and leave for a month simply because I want to. Not because I am escaping my life, but because I finally built a life I don’t need to escape from.

I am officially the happiest, healthiest and wealthiest I have ever been. There is something about saying that at 51 that stops me in my tracks, because my mother never got here.

On September 21, 2005, at 50 years old, my mother ended her life. This September, 21 years later, I will be on a pilgrimage in France. I am now older than my dead mother. That is a sentence I never knew I would have to learn how to carry.

For a long time after she died, I was lost. Dissociated is probably a better word. The years between 2005 and 2011 are difficult for me to explain because I was functioning, but I wasn’t really living consciously inside my own life. Eventually, I started seeking help.

I put myself into treatment to get a handle on my self-medicating. When I found some footing, I began rewarding the version of myself who was choosing to stay awake. I started a company in 2012, and somewhere in those early years of rebuilding, I gave myself the gift of yoga teacher training. Something inside me opened. My curiosity came alive, and once it did, I couldn’t stop asking questions.

Next came Kundalini teacher training, and then I just kept going. Over the years, I have accumulated somewhere around 2,500 hours of certifications, trainings and study across different healing modalities and traditions. I studied the psyche, the nervous system, trauma, somatics, consciousness, religion, mythology, Jung, the unconscious, the body and the soul. Mostly, I think I have spent the last decade and a half trying to understand one enormous question: Why do humans do what they do?

Perhaps underneath that was another question I didn’t know I was asking: Why did my mother lose her way, and how do I find mine?

Yesterday, I spoke with my mother’s AA sponsor. Twenty-one years later, I am still learning things about her. I learned that my mother wasn’t particularly forthcoming about her bipolar diagnosis. In fact, she wasn’t particularly forthcoming about much of her internal life. She kept things hidden.

I don’t say that as judgment. I understand hiding much better now, as I study the shadow. Shame hides. Guilt hides. Fear hides. Pain hides. Families hide. Cultures hide. Religions hide. And sometimes the things that are buried don’t disappear. They simply wait for someone willing to dig.

Maybe it’s no accident I ended up calling my work The Dirt Codes. I’ve spent most of my adult life digging around in what gets buried.

Not only through my mother’s story, but through my own. And along the way, that search led me somewhere unexpected: to a labyrinth.

Years ago, I became fascinated by the pattern of the labyrinth and eventually decided to build one on our property. Mine will be about 60 feet wide when it is finished. It has taken years just to understand the foundation and begin creating it. It still isn’t finished.

Neither am I.

Then one day I walked into Churchill’s, a century-old bookstore in my neighborhood, and found a book about labyrinths. I looked up the author, and that led me to an international labyrinth community documenting thousands of labyrinths around the world, and eventually to facilitator training.

I could have taken the training in the United States, but there was another option: Chartres Cathedral in France, a place whose medieval labyrinth has been walked for more than 800 years. So I decided to go there.

I will spend five days in Paris before traveling to Chartres for the training. I want to understand the labyrinth not simply as an object or a beautiful pattern, but as an experience. A way of walking with ourselves. A way of entering, circling, confronting, surrendering and returning. Eventually, I want to be able to invite others into the labyrinth I am building at home with more understanding of what the journey can offer them.

But two days of training hardly seemed like enough reason to cross an ocean, so I gave myself 30. Next, after Chartres, I am heading south, and that is where another thread of my studies begins to reveal itself: Mary Magdalene.

I have spent time studying the Gospel of Mary and the seven powers the soul encounters in its ascent. I have been fascinated by how ancient descriptions of the soul can sound remarkably familiar when placed beside Jungian psychology, ego consciousness and the modern language we use to describe the unconscious. Different centuries, different symbols, different ladders, and yet human beings seem to keep discovering versions of the same interior terrain.

Who are we beneath what we have been taught to be? What happens when we encounter the parts of ourselves we fear? What is left when identity begins falling away? And why have certain ways of understanding the human experience been buried, excluded, forgotten or destroyed?

Those questions have led me to Mary. So after Chartres, I will begin my own Mary Magdalene pilgrimage through southern France, including the cave at Sainte-Baume where tradition says Mary Magdalene spent the later years of her life.

I know what I have come to believe about Mary Magdalene, even if we can’t prove every piece of her story. I am interested in what survives. I am interested in what got buried. I am interested in the voices that disappear from official stories and somehow continue whispering for centuries anyway. I’m going to France to walk closer to that story, not to decide what I believe, but to deepen what I already know and share what I discover with others.

I am interested in what Mary and Jesus were discussing in these early texts about consciousness, attachment, fear, matter, spirit and liberation. I am especially interested in why those conversations still feel so recognizable inside a human being living two thousand years later.

Maybe that is why this trip feels less like a vacation and more like a continuation. My labyrinth is unfinished. My studies are unfinished. My understanding of my mother is unfinished. And now I am beginning my own memoir, Maya. Kali. Mary.

Those three names have become markers for the different ways I have come to understand my own life: the material world I lived inside, the destruction that forced me to see differently, and the return to something deeper underneath it all. I didn’t set out for Mary to become the bookend of this story. Yet, somehow, after all these years of searching, she did.

Twenty-one years ago, my mother’s life ended. For years afterward, some part of mine ended with hers. Then, slowly, I started coming back. I studied. I built. I failed. I succeeded. I lost things. I found things. I questioned everything. I learned to enter the places in myself that I had once been afraid to see.

And now, at 51, I get to do something my younger self could never have imagined. I get to pack a bag, kiss my husband goodbye, leave my adult children to their own lives, walk through Paris, walk the labyrinth at Chartres, walk toward Mary’s cave, write, study, wander, listen, and stay gone for 30 days simply because I have finally reached a point in my life where I can.

Perhaps this is what it means to become older than your dead mother. I stopped wanting to discover why her story ended the way it did. Instead, I realize I’m already standing beyond it. And I get to decide what happens next.

Twenty-one years after my mother chose to leave, I’m choosing to go.

It made me laugh, but it also made me think.

Adaptation is one of nature’s oldest survival mechanisms. Every living system adapts to its environment. Plants adapt. Animals adapt. Businesses adapt. Athletes adapt. Military units adapt.

Humans do too.

The difference is that many of our most important adaptations happen unconsciously.

The child who learned to stay quiet to avoid conflict may become the adult who struggles to speak up.

The entrepreneur who learned to say yes to every opportunity may eventually find themselves burned out.

The competitor who begins playing not to lose often loses the very edge that made them successful.

These aren’t character flaws.

They’re adaptations.

The question isn’t whether you’re adapting.

The question is:

What are you adapting to?

I woke up this morning thinking about authority.

As a little girl born in the ‘70s and growing up through the ‘80s and ‘90s, authority felt real. Teachers, doctors, pastors, police officers, experts. They all seemed to occupy a place above me. There was an invisible ceiling that I didn’t question. You respected authority. You earned your place beneath it. If you worked hard enough, maybe one day you’d earn the respect of the people above you.

Looking back, I realize that’s how my psyche was mapped.

Then life happened.

As I moved through my thirties, forties, and now into my fifties, that ceiling began to crack. So many people I had placed on pedestals turned out not to be who I thought they were. Somewhere along the way, I had confused authority with wisdom.

The funny thing is, I’ve always challenged authority. My husband laughs because I’ll question almost anything, and he’ll just say, “Shocker.” Looking back, I don’t think I was trying to rebel. I think I was testing it. I wanted to know if it was worthy of my respect.

As I sat with this this morning, I realized something else.

Most of the authority figures I was trying to impress were men.

Bosses. Mentors. Leaders.

And underneath all of that, if I’m being honest, I think I was still trying to earn my father’s approval. (Hello, shadow work.)

It’s funny how the psyche works. We think we’re chasing success, recognition, or respect, when sometimes we’re simply replaying an old story we haven’t yet seen.

The beautiful part is that my father and I found each other again. After nearly twenty years of distance, he now sends me messages telling me how proud he is. It’s something I never expected to receive, and I don’t want to pretend it doesn’t matter.

But I also know that something had already changed in me.

Years ago, while standing in the Himalayas, I made a small ceremonial boat and set it adrift down the Ganges River. In my heart, I was releasing him. I was letting go of the father I thought I’d never have.

Looking back, I think that’s when the ceiling really began to disappear.

The more I studied Jung, depth psychology, phenomenology, and the Gospel of Mary, the more one idea kept returning. Self-authority. Not arrogance. Not believing you know everything. Becoming responsible for your own perception instead of borrowing someone else’s certainty.

Today, I wonder if influence has become our new version of authority. Followers become credibility. Algorithms become reputation. Virality becomes expertise. But why do we want influence in the first place? What are we trying to have authority over? Are we helping people think for themselves, or are we asking them to think more like us?

I don’t think experience should be dismissed. There are people whose knowledge has been earned, and that deserves respect. But I’ve stopped assuming someone is wise simply because they’re standing on a stage, wrote a book, or have a large following.

These days, I’m less interested in authority and more interested in discernment.

Maybe the first half of life teaches us to borrow authority. Maybe the second half teaches us to trust our own ability to see.

I’m not trying to become someone’s authority anymore.

I’m trying to become a better guide.

Maybe the role of a guide isn’t to tell people what to think.

Maybe it’s to help people learn how to navigate themselves.

Because I’m not sure most of us were ever taught.

Funny how one person believing in you can quietly redirect the course of your life.

Heidi and I also share another passion: live music. We don’t just enjoy concerts—we intentionally make time for them. Over the years we’ve traveled together to see the Rolling Stones, P!nk, Counting Crows, Lady Gaga, and now KALEO with Elle King opening.

I love that our friendship has been built in both worlds. One built around precision. The other built around presence.

As we found our seats, everything was exactly what you’d expect. The drive through Colorado was beautiful. Red Rocks is one of those places that reminds you how incredible nature can be. People were finding their seats, buying drinks, talking, laughing. It was all wonderfully ordinary. The material world doing what the material world does.

Then the sun slipped behind the rocks.

The first notes rolled across those giant red walls, and I could literally feel the energy move through my body.

I’ve been studying the idea of nous through the Gospel of Mary Magdalene—the bridge between the material world and the spiritual world. I don’t pretend to fully understand it yet, but for a few hours I felt it. I wasn’t transported somewhere else. I became more present to where I already was. The rocks seemed more alive. The sky felt bigger. The people around me somehow disappeared and became part of the experience at the same time. It felt as though I was standing on a bridge where the material world and the spiritual world briefly met.

Elle King opened the evening and said we were about to take a journey through her life through the lyrics of her songs. I immediately smiled because I thought, that’s exactly what great art does. It doesn’t just entertain us. It reveals the artist. It invites us into their lived experience. It made me realize that’s exactly what I’ve been trying to do with The Dirt Codes. Not just write songs, but create maps through consciousness. Every lyric is an invitation to walk through another part of the human experience.

Then KALEO took the stage, and I was completely caught off guard. I knew some of their music, but hearing them live was something entirely different. Goosebumps rolled through my body over and over again. I found myself asking a question I’ve been carrying ever since.

Why do some artists move us so deeply?

I don’t think it’s technical perfection.

I don’t think it’s production.

I think it’s originality.

Both artists felt completely comfortable inside their own voice. Nothing felt borrowed. Nothing felt manufactured. Nothing felt like they were trying to become someone else. They simply stood on stage and offered something that had clearly been earned through living.

We’re living in a fascinating moment in history. Artificial intelligence can write beautiful words. Social media can manufacture carefully curated identities. It’s becoming easier every day to imitate intelligence, confidence, success, and even wisdom. But originality cannot be manufactured. Authenticity cannot be duplicated. There is something about lived experience—about earning your perspective instead of borrowing someone else’s—that carries an unmistakable frequency.

I think our bodies recognize it before our minds do.

As I sat there beside Heidi, I couldn’t help but think about how this evening even came to exist. If I hadn’t started Modern Day Sniper, I wouldn’t know her. If she hadn’t encouraged me to shoot, I might still be hiding behind the business instead of participating in the community we built together. One decision led to another. One relationship opened another door. One quiet act of encouragement eventually led to standing beneath a Colorado sky, sharing an unforgettable evening with a friend while feeling something in my soul come alive through music.

The greatest realization I brought home wasn’t about the concert itself. It was about the difference between what is manufactured and what is offered.

Nothing about that evening felt manufactured.

Not the friendship.

Not the music.

Not the weather.

Not the laughter.

Not the surprise.

It was honestly offered.

And because it was honestly offered, it could be honestly received.

Maybe that’s the bridge I’ve been searching for.

Every once in a while, if we’re paying attention, the two meet in a single moment. We don’t leave the material world behind; we simply experience it as though it has become illuminated from within.

For a few beautiful hours at Red Rocks, I felt like I was standing exactly there.

On the bridge.

Today our nation celebrates 250 years.

Like many Americans, I have complicated feelings about where we are. I don’t agree with everything happening in our country. I don’t think any thoughtful person should blindly celebrate without also acknowledging the work still left to do.

But today isn’t about politics for me.

Today is about gratitude.

Because I married an American.

Not the loud kind.

Not the kind chasing followers or headlines.

The quiet kind.

The kind who never had to tell you he was a hero because he never believed he was one.

My husband grew up in a small town in western New York. His family owned a neighborhood bar. Before that, generations before him made their living however they could, including running moonshine along the Great Lakes. He grew up in a blue-collar family of Polish heritage where life wasn’t polished—it was earned.

He was the kid with thick glasses who got picked on.

The quiet one.

The one who disappeared into books about history, wars, and people who stood for something larger than themselves.

He found hunting.

He found mentors.

He found discipline before he found confidence.

At seventeen years old, he joined the United States Marine Corps.

The little boy who once escaped into stories eventually found himself living one.

He became a Marine sniper instructor. He deployed to Iraq. He served alongside extraordinary men. He was wounded in combat and returned home with a Purple Heart.

And then came the part no one prepares you for.

Coming home.

War eventually ends.

The battles inside a person often don’t.

Like so many veterans, he had to figure out who he was after the uniform came off. He faced difficult relationships, betrayal, family pain, and years of rebuilding a life that looked nothing like the one he imagined as a young Marine.

Then our paths crossed.

For the last decade we’ve walked through more storms than I could have imagined. We’ve experienced betrayal inside our Veteran-owned business.

Financial devastation.

Legal battles.

Heartbreak.

Loss.

We’ve questioned everything more than once. And yet...

I’ve never watched this man become bitter. I’ve watched him become wiser. I’ve watched him choose integrity when shortcuts would have been easier.

I’ve watched him quietly give away everything he learned through war so someone else might become more capable, more disciplined, and maybe make it home.

Together we built Modern Day Sniper.

Not because we wanted to become influencers. Because we believed experience should be passed on. Because competence matters. Because character matters even more.

People often ask me why I’m so fascinated by the human psyche.

Why I study ancient texts, the story of Mary Magdalene, depth psychology, and the unconscious.

Because every life is a map.

Every family leaves patterns.

Every generation hands something forward.

I’m always trying to understand how ordinary boys become extraordinary men... and how extraordinary men still carry ordinary wounds.

My husband has taught me that courage isn’t found in the absence of pain. It’s found in continuing to live with integrity despite it.

He’s one of the most humble men I’ve ever known.

One of the kindest.

One of the most genuine.

He has never needed to inflate his story because the truth has always been enough.

So today, on America’s 250th birthday, I’m simply grateful.

Grateful for the country that gave a quiet kid from western New York the opportunity to dream.

Grateful for the Marines who shaped him.

Grateful he came home.

Grateful that of all the people in this country...

I get to call him my husband.

Happy 250th, America. And thank you to every family who has carried the unseen weight of service.

I stepped away from teaching mindset because I was still trying to understand what it actually meant to hold yourself together when life stops making sense.

But I never stopped studying.

I dug into human behavior, the nervous system, Jungian psychology, patterns, performance, awareness, shadow, leadership, pressure, and meaning. I studied what causes people to collapse, and I studied what helps them rebuild.

What I discovered is this: most people do not have a skill problem. They have a nervous system problem.

When the system destabilizes, performance disappears. In life. In business. In relationships. And behind the rifle.

The Inner Pathway is the return of those conversations. Not as surface-level positivity, motivational speaking, or therapy, but as a space for honest exploration into the patterns quietly shaping our lives beneath the surface.

This is about understanding pressure instead of being consumed by it. It’s about learning how to stay connected to yourself when life gets loud.

Executive Summary

Fifty-one years old. Minimal riding experience. Solo operation from Yakima, WA to Jacksonville, OR. Two days of trail riding including an accidental Level 3 on day one. Full kit won from Fly Racing. Zero injuries despite multiple bike-downs. Came home with an open solar plexus and a clear confirmation of what the Inner Pathway has been building toward.

This is my Dirtastic report.

Mission Objective

This was not a competition. This was a deliberate performance test — outside my primary domain, in an unfamiliar environment, operating solo, with minimal prior training on platform.

Objective: Show up. Execute. Find out who I am when the terrain gets uncomfortable.

Secondary objective: Use this experience as the live-fire proof of concept for the Inner Pathway — the curriculum I’m building inside the Modern Day Sniper community around the relationship between mind, body, and material performance.

Gear & Logistics

Platform: Kawasaki KLX 140RL. Chosen specifically because I can put both feet flat on the ground — manageable, stable, confidence-inspiring for a developing rider. Know your platform. Ride what fits you, not what looks cool.

Transport: Solo trailering. Purchased my own trailer, ramp, and hitch. Loaded and unloaded without assistance. This matters — gear dependency is a liability. If you can’t handle your own equipment, you’re not fully autonomous.

Protective equipment: Full kit. Chest guard, knee pads, elbow pads, helmet. I laid my bike down multiple times on the mountain. I walked away without injury every time. Two other riders — my tent neighbors, younger, newer — skipped the full kit. They got banged up. The gear is not optional. Dress for the crash, not the ride.

Fuel management: Learned to monitor reserves, flip to reserve tank, and manage refueling in the field. Basic, but it had to be learned and executed in real conditions.

Camp setup: Solo. Full camp — Acacia tent (large, architectural, took practice to assemble), French press, ice chest, Jetboil. I ran the butane out on the Jetboil by forgetting to shut it off. Noted for next time. The only assist I needed all weekend was with ratchet straps — old ones, new ones, different mechanisms. That’s a skill gap I’m closing before the next op.

One-line logistics assessment: I operated independently across two states, over two days, with equipment I’d never fully field-tested. It held. I held.

Performance — Day One

Enrolled in beginner fundamentals class.

Fundamentals acquired:

• Feathering the front brake

• Finger placement — always maintain contact with the clutch

• The clutch is your best friend. Don’t be afraid of wearing it out. Use it.

• Standing on the bike — learned it, need more of it

• Commitment on grooved terrain — Jacksonville trails cut deep sand grooves from water runoff. You commit to the groove or you meet the ground. There is no middle.

Then they took the beginners on a Level 3 trail.

“Oops,” they said.

I stalled out repeatedly on the declines. I laid the bike down multiple times. I got back up every time. I finished the trail.

Assessment: Raw execution under unplanned pressure. No preparation, no briefing, no warm-up. Just terrain and whatever I had. I had enough.

Performance — Day Two

Level 2 trail. Deliberate this time.

Notable improvement from Day One:

• Maintained engine at low RPM through technical sections — no stalling

• Smoother clutch management throughout

• Better situational awareness on the trail

Hill clinic: Attended a dedicated uphill/downhill skills session. I can now navigate steep technical hills with confidence. One session. Real results. Braap.

Assessment: Measurable skill acquisition over 24 hours. The fundamentals from Day One were already integrating. This is how performance develops — repetition under real conditions, not controlled range drills.

What Broke Down

The instructor situation.

Three instructors. Snarky comments. Targeted at newer riders, including me.

I confirmed it wasn’t imagined. I confirmed it calmly. And I rode away.

No argument. No emotional spiral. No replaying it in my tent that night.

This is worth noting in an after-action context: your ability to manage social friction in a performance environment is a skill. If I had let that situation take up real estate in my head, it would have cost me performance on the trail. It didn’t. I compartmentalized, re-focused, and executed.

Know when to disengage. Not every battle is worth fighting. The trail is the mission.

Bad instruction has a way of making you grateful for good instruction. If you've been through Caylen's fundamentals class, you know what I mean. That man is a gift to beginners. Not everyone is.

Mental Performance Assessment

This is where it gets relevant for the rifleman community.

The terrain on Day One was, objectively, sketchy. Life and limb territory. The kind of environment where broken bones are a real possibility and getting off the mountain under your own power is not guaranteed.

My internal state: calm. Present. Grounded.

No anxiety. No scanning for external validation. No performance anxiety about what the women around me thought of my riding. I was entirely self-contained — operating from my own internal reference point, not from the crowd.

When I cleared a difficult section, the satisfaction was mine. Not because someone acknowledged it. Just because I knew.

This is new for me. External validation was a significant distortion pattern for years. The fact that it wasn’t present in a high-stakes physical environment tells me something important about where the inner work has landed.

And this is exactly the point I want to make to anyone in this community who performs under pressure — whether behind a rifle, on a stage, in a boardroom, or on a mountain:

The material item only performs as well as the operator behind it.

You can have the best rifle, the best bike, the best gear. If your mind is running on external validation, fear of judgment, or unresolved noise from your past — that’s what’s going to show up downrange. In the groove. Under pressure.

Mind. Body. Material world. All three have to be working together. When they are, you feel it. I felt it on that mountain. It was golden.

What I’d Do Differently

Get the fundamentals dialed before the large group event. Two hundred riders, mixed skill levels, variable instruction quality — not the ideal environment to be learning basic clutch control. I’d recommend getting range time on your platform before attending a clinic of this size. Show up to the clinic to refine, improve, but not to learn from scratch.

That said — if you have minimal experience and the opportunity comes up, go anyway. Just know that beginner level is usually a lie and you need to be okay with that. Discomfort is the curriculum. The Level 3 I accidentally rode on Day One taught me more than any controlled beginner drill would have.

Most performance training focuses on the external. The platform. The technique. The data. All of that matters. But underneath it, the operator is running an internal program. Patterns laid down by experience, by wounds, by the things that were never resolved.

Dirtastic was a field test of what happens when that internal program has been upgraded.

I didn’t ride well because I’m a skilled rider. I rode well because I wasn’t fighting myself while I was doing it. I was just there. Fully present. Fully capable. Fully mine.

That’s the goal of the Inner Pathway. Not to make you a different person. To clear the noise so the person you already are can actually show up and perform.

Becoming is slower than I expected.

Less clean than I thought it would be.

But something is changing.

You’ve been conditioned to chase the external signal. To measure your life against outcomes, approval, and timing. When those collapse, it feels like something is wrong. It isn’t. You were just looking in the wrong place.

Diamond Antidote
Return to what is steady and true without needing it to be seen. Presence over performance. Connection over comparison. When you anchor there, nothing outside of you gets to decide your state.

This is the work.

Not escaping the chaos.
Seeing through it, and still choosing where you stand.

I’ve made millions of dollars in my lifetime.

None of it came from social media.

Not one lead.

Which is interesting, because I’ve spent decades building real businesses in America. Cars. Credit. Houses. Firearm education. The backbone of the American economy. You name it, I’ve done it.

At the same time, like everyone else, I participated in social media. Posting ideas, sharing experiences, talking about leadership and integrity. And yes, occasionally pointing out the lies, the cons, and the games people play in systems that pretend to be honest.

Likes would come.

Leads never did.

Nor did I ever ask.

Part of that is probably because I’ve been in sales since I was fifteen. That’s thirty-five years of watching how and why people buy.

When you’ve spent that long inside the mechanics of persuasion, you start to see the levers.

The emotional hooks.
The scarcity tactics.
The carefully constructed stories.

Sometimes you watch someone online selling a narrative that you know isn’t real. A persona that works very well in the algorithm but has very little to do with who they actually are.

That may be the most disheartening part of the internet.

Watching a performance get rewarded while the public assumes it’s truth.

Because who someone presents online is often very different from who they are behind the scenes.

Once you see that clearly, it becomes very hard to participate in the same game.

Not because you can’t play it.

But because you’re not willing to.

So instead of trying to compete inside that system, I removed myself from it.

What’s interesting is that the people who have paid me the most over the years almost always met me the same way.

A retreat.
A training environment.
A workshop.
A conversation where someone hears how I think and suddenly says, “Can I hire you?”

No algorithm involved.

Just proximity.

That’s when something became obvious.

Social media operates inside the attention economy. Visibility. Constant output.

But real trust still operates inside a different system entirely.

Reputation.
Presence.
Witnessed competence.
Results that match your words.

The distortion of social media is the belief that if you are not converting online, you are invisible.

But many forms of influence have never lived in feeds.

They live in rooms.

And the more I pay attention to that difference, the clearer something becomes.

My work was never meant for the algorithm.

It was meant for the room.

To the one who stole my ideas
your inability to be original is loud.

greed is a short game.

To the one who sued me while I was down
